In light of recent news reports it is no surprise that Monsignor David Cappo will step down from the position of Chair of the new National Mental Health Commission, said Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Shadow Minister for Ageing and Shadow Minister for Mental Health.
“The appointment of Monsignor Cappo had caused quiet concern in the sector as the role is seen as needing experience and the ability to deliver at the highest levels of government and the public sector,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells.
“Mental Health is too important to be compromised in any way.
“The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, insists that Monsignor Cappo was the obvious choice to lead the Commission.
“However, the selection process and his appointment lacked transparency.
“The Minister must ensure that the next appointment is made with more accountability.”
